I used to be a competitive swimmer and am now a swimming teacher. The amount of terrified kids I teach is unreal & the general reason they're so scared - their parents have put their own fears on them. Please God, if you are a parent who is scared of water, get your kids confident & swimming. It is a life saving skill.

man I'm 29 and I refuse to go another year not swimming... As a child I learned early, but do to the location of the YMCA (pool) and the murders that area that happened so often around the location I wasn't allowed to go back.... Now I have a 3 year old and he wants to swim, and I refuse to accept not being able to swim with my 3 year old... I will not let what happened North Philly years and year ago ruin something so simple yet special, like swimming with my child..

teaching kids can be tough because they can't think on our level. But then again teaching adults is harder because they are set in their ways. You gotta just take it slow.

Thanks for putting this out there. It is inspiring. I will use it because I am 35 and am barely going to learn. I've lived in the West Texas desert all my life but I want to visit the ocean this summer. My wife, kids and I will take classes later this month...

am thirty and i dont know how to swim , once i was in a sea my husband taught me how to float on my back and just when he let me go i panicked and almost drowned lol so i guess its not an easy thing if we fear it.

i am 47 and thought i would go swimming in the atlantic ocean , like when i was young only then i went into the lake and there were no waves i almost drowmed but was proud i finaly went then i started swimming lesson this monday and my back is killing me i can barely walk so i am taking one more lesson and then doing water aerbic for awhile and practice on my own but i forget how to even float and dog peddle it's been 4 days and i miss the water can't wait till tommrow

It'll take you like 2 weeks if you really do practice everyday... that depends however on if you have any fear of water and how committed you are

I can't understand how people learn how to swim on their own. My brother learned when he was 8-9 years old, all by himself. That's one of the reasons i hate him so much. I'm 23 and i just can't even lift my feet off the ground while in the sea. I'm terrified.

my dad is such a great swimmer and he just pushed me into the water... expecting me to learn how to swim right then and there. i panicked and have been afraid of the water since. then he tried to teach me how to float... so i can do that. but i guess i'm not coordinated enough to swim lol. i'll be taking lessons this fall... i just want to get over the huge fear of deep water. i mean... i don't want to live with it my whole life. i'm already 16 and how much longer can i wait?
