Abbott and Costello Cartoons 1967

Uploaded by: jarndt1977
Video Description:
Produced in 1967 for RKO-Jomar, this Hanna-Barbera cartoon followed the same route taken by the Laurel and Hardy cartoons from the previous year. The animated version of the Bud Abbott and Lou Costello comedy team was unique in the fact that Bud Abbott (1895-1974) himself provided the voice for his animated counterpart. In fact, the cartoon residuals were Abbott's main source of income during his illness riddled later years. The voice of his partner, Lou Costello (1906-1959), was provided by Stan Irwin. These cartoons failed to capture the magic of the duo's live-action films, and the 156 episodes were only seen in a limited number of markets.

These cartoons were what introduced me to A&C when I was too young to stay up for the late show. I was then surprized to eventually find out they were real live men once. Ironically the first of their films I saw was "Meet the Mummy" which was their last good one.

In the summer, I used to watch the Abbott & Costello cartoon at my friend Chris Lombardo's house (odds are he will never find his name here) between hops in his pool. It was on a cable TV channel we had in NJ... I believe it was Channel 29 out of Philadelphia. Anyone remember the station call letters?

That would evidently be WTAF-TV (now WTXF). As for the New York stations, based on the RKO General connection, WOR-TV was the first to air them; by the time I was growing up, the cartoons were on WNEW-TV.

I miss this cartoon series. I wish that it were back on free tv. First there is cable tv, which people have to pay for, then there's satellite radio, which people have to pay for. What's next that people have to pay for which used to be free?

It must have been strange for Bud to work with a sound-a-like of his legendary partner. You can tell that Bud sounds very old and or tired at times. I guess they really couldn't do much with this, but this makes me miss Lou even more, it's missing his comedic touch. Still, I'm glad they did this to introduce them to new fans.

I think the great Mel Blanc is the voice for the germ. Don Messick did Scooby Doo, Astro, and Ranger Smith. Can't tell what voice he is in this.

I think that Abbott must have enjoyed himself voicing his own cartoon version. This cartoon show was cool, it sounds strange that Boomerang and Cartoon Network haven't exhibited it until now.
About Don Messick, he also voiced Dr. Quest, Bandit, Papa Smurf and Azrael.
